Process
Music has always been a central part of my life, and my connection to art and music inspires how they intertwine. I was deeply moved by the song "Falling Apart" by Hahlweg and envisioned creating a projection-mapping music video to be displayed on my college class hall, hence unusual aspect ratio. I edited the track to fit class requirements and began blending type animation with video overlays to capture the ethereal, floaty feeling the song evoked. The calm vocals and instrumentals, mixed with intense moments, inspired visuals that mirrored the sensation of floating in and out of consciousness.
The video begins with white smoke, gradually engulfing the screen and creating a dreamy, hazy atmosphere. Within the smoke, memories of a past love flicker—distorted images like memories fading in and out. As the lyrics glitch, they represent a trembling voice revealing a hard truth for the first time. When the lyrics "But things start to fall apart" play, the serene smoke is ripped away, pulling the viewer into a dissociative space.
In this new space, shadows and grasping hands surround the viewer. An eye appears, oscillating in and out of focus to the music’s rhythm. Eyes typically symbolize clarity and truth, but here, the blurred eye takes away those meanings, representing the struggle to stay grounded amidst turmoil.
As the music becomes calm again, the eye remains out of focus, pulling us back into the haunting memories of lost love. The visuals become hypnotic, mirroring the loss of the fight to stay present. The final moments swirl with the unknown, leaving only fragmented memories of touch and connection.
I do not own the rights to the music and do not profit from the video.
